The global picture provided by the CHELEM databases can be used to as a data source for macroeconomic models. CHELEM also allows long term, structural studies to be undertaken, using various indicators, a number of which are incorporated on the CD-ROM and may be employed by anyone using CHELEM. Apart from the usual indicators relating to trade (structural ratios, growth rates, trade flow hierarchies or cumulated balances), various specific indicators have been constructed. It is thus possible to take a long term view of the following:
F competition between countries (or country groups) in each of the product categories or for any aggregate of these categories;
F the relative position of each country (or group of countries) for each heading in the balance of payments;
F revealed comparative advantage and disadvantage, which allows product categories (or their aggregates) to be classified for each of the countries or groups of countries, and which may also be broken down according to the country's trade partners;
F the contribution of each transaction heading to the current account balance, for each country or group of countries;
F the relative intensity of bilateral trade flows between two countries (or groups of countries) for each of the product categories given, or for aggregates thereof;
F the respective roles of individual nations and the structure of flows in the evolution of exports from a country or group of countries;
F the nature of the specialisation of each country (or group of countries), in terms of its amplitude and adaptation to world demand, or according to the technological level of the products;
F the ratio of each trade heading to GDP or population of a country or country group;
F the share of each country (or country group) in the world, in terms of the various headings of foreign transactions, of population, of global GDP, or in terms of world production;
F the level of Gross Domestic Product per person in each country (or country group);
F the general level of prices of each country (or country group), in comparison with the respective levels of the United States, the European Union or the world as a whole, which also indicates the real exchange rate both in time and space;
F the overall levels of purchasing power parity for any national currency, with respect to the US dollar and the Ecu.
