RENCONTRES EUROPE ET INTERNATIONAL
| Des incertitudes pèsent sur l’avenir de l’Union européenne et sa place dans le monde. De la crise sont nées des ébauches institutionnelles pour l’Europe, et il s’agit aujourd’hui de les transformer en un édifice solide et pérenne. Les grands chantiers aujourd’hui ouverts pour l’Union européenne à 28 et pour la zone euro posent des questions économiques, institutionnelles, politiques, sociétales, de gouvernance. |
Dans ce contexte, le CEPII et France Stratégie organisent des rencontres mensuelles sur l’Europe qui ont vocation à rassembler, autour d’un intervenant choisi pour son actualité ou son implication dans le champ européen, diverses personnalités du monde officiel, économique, financier ou académique, pour discuter collectivement des grandes thématiques européennes. |

Markus K. Brunnermeier & Jean-Pierre Landau on "The Euro and the Battle of Ideas"

The sovereign debt crisis that started in 2010 in the Eurozone has left observers wondering whether the single currency can survive. In a recently published book, Markus K. Brunnermeier, Harold James, and Jean-Pierre Landau argue that the core problem with the Euro lies in the philosophical differences between the founding countries of the Eurozone. Weaving together economic analysis and historical reflection, the authors aim to provide an explanation of the historical, intellectual and cultural roots of the contrasting German and French economic philosophies. They discuss how the crisis has led the Euro’s member states to focus on national, as opposed to collective, responses, a reaction explained by the resurgence of the battle of economic ideas. The authors will discuss their analysis of these issues and show how these seemingly incompatible differences can be reconciled to ensure Europe’s prosperity and survival. The presentation will be followed by a discussion and questions from the audience.
