Advanced economies have gone through rapid structural change over the last few decades. These changes are manifested in terms of industry, skill, and occupational composition, and in terms of the wage distribution. Inasmuch as these changes are driven by demand factors, they all operate through firms. In addition, the underlying source of economic progress, namely productivity, is also determined by firms. Changes in the composition and internal organization of firms are, therefore, important factors that drive structural change in the economy. This workshop gathers leading scholars that are currently studying these issues, to which we add a special focus on policy relevant questions.
