"The economic history of China's Empire and its influence on contemporary China" by Professor Richard Von Glahn, UCLA

During this exceptional conference, Professor Von Glahn (UCLA) will analyse the changing role of the state in the imperial Chinese economy and its implications both for economic growth and for the state's role in society. He will discuss to what extent the patterns that can be identified throughout the entire imperial period have influenced the building up of China’s economic power over de last four decades and current economic policies.
Richard Von Glahn is Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and an authoritative specialist of the history of China. He has published in particular Fountain of Fortune: Money and Monetary Policy in China, 1000-1700 (1996) and The Economic History of China, from Antiquity to the Nineteeth Century (2016).
